The Festival of Sacrifice

The Festival of Sacrifice

Issue 62 November 2009

At this time of the Hajj pilgrimage, Omar Yehia sees how your donations can deliver Qurbani to those most in need.

Eid al-Adha, the festival of sacrifice, is a time for Muslims around the world to reflect on their lives as well as the greater state of humanity. It is a time of giving and showing support for those less fortunate around the world.

The festival is also a reminder of the story of the Prophet Abraham, when he was ordered by God to sacrifice his son, and is thus marked by the sacrifice of an animal in submission to the will of God. This sacrifice, called Qurbani, is usually of a sheep, goat or cow and a significant portion of the meat is given to the poor.

The Prophet Muhammad said of it,

“There is nothing dearer to God during the days of Qurbani than the sacrificing of animals...therefore sacrifice with an open and happy heart.”
